Where does our feed come from?

Most of our feed comes from Modesto Milling in Modesto, CA. They are certified USDA and OTCO organic and serve as a dairy co-op. We are able to obtain our organic alfalfa pellets and kelp from a quality dealer such as Modesto Milling and also obtain our Diatomaceous Earth there as well. In addition we obtain our salts from them as well as chicken feed for our hens that assist with insect control.

Why are we not certified organic?

As we do have to pen our ewes after lambing and on ocassion for illness or injury we would have to be able to only feed organic alfalfa as well as the other feeds. Here this is our greatest challenge. We are able to obtain organic alfalfa but not consistently as larger operations receive full truck loads and we mainly feed on the pasture so we do not need this large amount; therefore are not a priority. When we are able to obtain organic hay, we do so. Yet this is an obstacle to certifying as an organic farm. However we do feed all other feeds organically and raise our sheep in a naturally balanced way.

What else do we do? Bad experience with lamb?

We live on almost 40 acres. We have a garden that feeds our families as well as numerous friends! Eggs from our chickens, and fruit from our many trees. We enjoy our own product as much as possible and many friends have sat at our table and been amazed that they too enjoyed lamb.

Lamb should be served just as that; young. Mutton is what many have eaten and have been told that lamb was being served. This does not do justice for the wonderful flavor and texture that high quality lamb can bring to the table through grilling, broiling, or baking. Try it, you will not be disappointed. Satisfaction guaranteed.
